Yard Sale Operations
The Methodist Men of Bethel Church (Lively) and those of Emmanuel Church (Morratico) originated in the early ‘60’s as a service outreach group of three churches (White Marsh United Methodist Church is closed).
When a benefactor donated some furniture to the group they began an auction in 1970. Prior to that they funded service projects with their own funds. In 1982 they moved their operation to an old county school and in 1999 they were able to complete a new building near Bethel Church on State Route 201 south, approximately 2.5 miles outside of Lively, VA. Sales from this location represent the largest fund-raiser for the group.
Yard sales are held on selected Saturdays, generally four or five from March to November. Sales are also advertised and announced through local media. Please check the events calendar located in the menu bar for the next sale date.
Donations of indoor and outdoor furniture, appliances, televisions, other electronics, sporting goods, tools, household items, dishes, silverware (almost everything except clothing) are accepted. Books, pictures and linens received are sold by the Methodist women of Bethel Church. All items are either sold by the Bethel-Emmanuel United Methodist Men (BEUMM) or distributed directly to people in need. In instances where items are distributed directly, usually the request comes from a volunteer agency such as the Interfaith Council or Church Resource Services in Lancaster County. Proceeds from these sales are distributed to charities, local volunteer services and churches supported by the BEUMM.
When Folks have items to donate they may drop them off at the BEUMM building in the designated area or request the items be picked up by one of the men’s teams. The generosity of the people on the Northern Neck who donate items is only exceeded by their willingness to shop with us until they find that special treasure that they just cannot live without. |
